In 1984, the Toshiba corporation sold the Soviets advanced machining equipment and computers that silenced their propellers. The Kursk, much to the consternation of the Congress at the time, benefited from this technology transfer.

The Kursk is an Akula Class submarine many of which are in active service. In 2009, the US Navy spotted an Akula class submarine off the Eastern Seaboard. This incident was the first of its kind since the Cold War. In 2012, an Akula was spotted in the Gulf of Mexico.
